Artist Statement

The art of painting images which strike a chord, such as landscapes, cityscapes, and seascapes fulfill my creative urge, providing relevance to my life as a driving force, something at which I can improve and even excel, though now 87 years of age.
Painting deeply satisfies me, as I apply what I have learned (and am even now learning) in the daily laying of pigment on canvas or paper. As I work at the easel, the process never fails to teach me something by way of delightful surprises in unexpected color harmonies or composition. These unplanned nuances are a source of excitement for me and greatly enrich my life experience.
As an artist, what I create often simply comes through me, as if I were a conduit for unexpressed emotion. I can, therefore, take little personal credit for my creations. Because of this, I consider myself a real debtor to life.

On aging and the creative process........

The great tool of the visual artist is his memory bank of experience lodged in his brain. Artistic imagination feeds on memories, flashes of which often come back outside the box of initial activity. Each painting then is a scientific experiment, drawing from mysterious selection from that memory bank. Sparked by these memories, ideas come forth, such that each purposeful stroke of the brush carries the desired structure, color and light to our creation. We surprise ourselves. It is as if an unknown force has taken over our body, moving hand in a new rhythm. What delight! We grow new, overcoming age, though bones may otherwise limit physical activity. Age offers a great gift, recollection, reviewed in the experience of artistic re-creation.
