Artist's Profile
Richard Sedlack’s masterful oil landscapes communicate his deep love of nature, its limitless varieties of expression and the ever-changing play of light upon its surface.
He travels often, exploring those parts of North America which remain relatively unspoiled. His favorite places include the gentle, lush landscapes of the Carolinas, the Mountains and coastlines of New England and Canada, the woods of northern Michigan and the rugged landscapes of Colorado and New Mexico.
Born in southern Alabama in 1945, a time when the gulf coast was relatively undeveloped, Richard spent much of his childhood exploring the natural world that surrounded him. Such daily opportunities to bond with nature came, temporarily, to an end when his family moved to urban Detroit. It was not a happy move for Richard who resolved that he would someday escape urban life and return to the unpolluted, un-congested countryside. In the meantime he was finding solace in what started as a hobby and quickly developed into a passion; painting.
Richard attended Wayne State University in Detroit where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1969. Soon after graduation he married another talented artist, Sandra. The two of them moved north into the countryside where Richard designed and built their home and art studio.
The uncertainties of an art career and the prospects of raising a family led Richard to a different, more secure vocation; that of a skilled carpenter. But by 1995, his children were grown and independent and Richard’s first love – painting – once again became his primary focus. Within three years important galleries in Michigan, California and Florida were showing his works.
In 2001 Richard was invited to become a signature member of the prestigious Oil Painters of America. His works are regularly exhibited in the society’s annual exhibition.
Richard is inspired by several of the great 19th century American artists, especially Willard Metcalf and Bolton Jones both of whom he admires for the remarkable quality, strength and atmosphere in their paintings.
