Artist's Profile
Harold Frontz is a versatile painter with an aptitude for all facets of landscape, seascape and still life painting. Harold has been strongly influenced by artists of the Massachusetts Cape Ann School and has studied with Gloucester artist Charles Movalli. Other Cape Ann artists who have provided inspiration are Emile Gruppe, Aldro Hibbard, Frederick Mulhaupt and Lester Stevens. However, his interest in subject matter encompasses a much wider scope. He received instruction at the British Mounts Bay Art Centre in Newlyn and painted en plein air in Cornwall, England and Northern Italy. Other instructors with whom he has had the privilege to study have included Ted Goerschner and Tony Couch.
Harold's work is best described as impressionistic, featuring clean, bright hues that provide an interesting variety of temperature, intensity and value. His impressionist manner showcases his dexterity with brush and paint, and the apparent spontaneity of his paintings is possible because he has dedicated himself to mastering the control of both watercolor and oil painting techniques.
Harold uses only archival products in his works of art. He uses professional-grade paints on oil-primed linen canvas. He applies a non-yellowing varnish to his finished paintings to protect the surface and create a pleasing luster to his work.
Harold is an "Artist Member" of the American Society of Marine Artists, a prestigious organization that was founded in 1978 "to recognize and promote marine art and history." He also is a "Professional Member" of the International Society of Marine Painters, a world-wide body of marine artists organized in 1974 "to promote the maritime subject as a cultural medium and to further the field of marine art and history." He has exhibited in numerous national juried shows and teaches art workshops. He has a Masters in Social Work, a Doctorate in Counseling and has worked for over 30 years as a mental health professional.
